2017 BMW M6 – Horsepower, Gran Coupe, Car Reviews

The 2017 BMW M6 is a paradoxical car. Its name harks back to an epic road-burning coupe, one with a race-derived inline-six engine, but in its current form it is a gigantic and heavy luxury machine that just happens to be fast. In both coupe and convertible forms, the M6 weighs in at around two tons, heft that’s overcome using a 560-hp twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8. Against this discussion of mass, let us introduce the 2015 M6—it’s still big and porky, but it receives a light freshening this year, just as its four-door Gran Coupe and pedestrian two-door 6-series siblings do.

With tasteful and aggressive design and extraordinary performance the new BMW M5 2017 is ready to hit the showroom floors next spring. This remarkable vehicle will be offered as a coupe or convertible. Both of these two forms weight in at around 2 tons. The coupe is 250 pounds lighter. Like we have already said, the company has changed almost nothing about the design of the famous M6. The 2017 BMW M6 will keep its jet-styled central front air intake as well as aerodynamic elements. The only thing that has been changed are the headlights. The headlights have been powered with full-LED illumination. Also, the turn-signal elements have been moved from the bottom to the top. As far as the interior of the new M6 is concerned, there are a few new colors and trim options. Like the cabin of its predecessor, the new model’s cabin will be made of the highest quality materials and equipped with the latest technology features.

2017 BMW M6 styling and performance

Under its long hood, 2016 bmw m6 gran coupe packed in a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8 that cranks out 560 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of torque, which is enough to run to 60 mph in a mere 4.1 seconds before going all the way to a top speed of 155 mph (pick the M Drivers Package and that figure climbs to 186 mph and you get a free driver’s training course, which seems like a good idea on BMW’s part).

That power is delivered via a lightning quick 7-speed dual-clutch automatic, or (and this one’s a rarity), an honest-to-goodness, three-pedal 6-speed manual. 2015 bmw m6 says they’ll hold on to manuals until the bitter end. The automatic may the better option here not only because of its rapid-fire cog swaps, but also because the M6’s wall of thrust at 1,700 rpm is a lot to handle if you’re commuting in traffic. Power is sent through an electronically controlled multi-plate limited-slip differential and shifted to the rear wheels exclusively.

The M6 has carried over largely unchanged since its debut in 2012, and that stays the same for 2017. Wider air intakes up front and blacked-out slats in the company’s signature kidney-style grille are only part of the M6’s story. At the rear, quad tailpipes that bookend the unique rear diffuser relay the V-8’s snarl to innocent bystanders. The M6 rides on 19- or 20-inch alloy wheels as standard, with staggered-width tires back-to-front. The M6 is 1.2 inches wider than a standard 6-Series, and its flared wheel arches that barely cover the Z-rated performance tires only bolster its menacing narrative.

Under the hood of this beast we will find a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine. With RWD system this powerful engine is capable to deliver 552 horsepower and 502 lb-ft of torque. A seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission with shift paddles will stay, and a traditional six-speed manual comes available as no-cost option. This powerful engine accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.2 seconds. How the 2017 BMW M6 coupe is roughly 250 pounds lighter than the convertible, we expect to see it and faster too. For both versions fuel economy is 16 mpg combined with the automatic transmission and 17 mpg with the manual transmission.

Down the road, 2017 bmw m6 sedan will likely offer a Competition Package, as it did starting with the 2014- model-year M5 and M6. In those cars, the kit raised the V-8’s output to 575 horsepower, added a sports exhaust system, and modified the hydraulic power steering for more directness. Given how the base M6’s mechanical setup enters 2015 unchanged, don’t expect the Competition Package’s upgrades to deviate from the current tune.

Unfortunately, BMW’s mid cycle update for the M6 does not include any sort of diet. Stripping out some weight would go a long way toward making the powerful coupe and convertible duo more engaging to drive. Of course, automakers tend to stray from significant light-weighting measures when doing anything short of redesigning a model entirely, but at least 2016 bmw m6 coupe updates for the attractive and highly capable M6 were light.
