What It Is: “2018 Jeep Wrangler” The 11th-generation descendant of the warrior that helped win freedom in World War II.
Why It Matters: Jeep sold more than 200,000 Wranglers last year. It’s a cash-spewing ATM that pays a lot of the company’s bills. It’s also the heart of the Jeep brand.
Platform: Jeep will continue with rugged body-on-frame construction to serve the off-roading aspirations of its faithful and multiplying constituents. That said, the coming edition will use modern materials to cut weight and boost mileage. Expect a hydroformed steel ladder frame carrying a body made of high-strength steel, aluminum, and plastic. A four-door pickup will join the lineup of two- and four-door models with hard- and softtops.
EXTERIOR AND INTERIOR DESIGN
How we have found out so far, the new 2018 Jeep Wrangler won’t suffer many exterior changes when compared with its predecessor. This next-generation Wrangler’s bodywork might be unchanged from ordinary Wranglers’ vehicles. According to some rumors the new Wrangler will be underpinned with a unibody platform instead of the traditional body-on-frame platform. It has been said it will come with some parts made up of aluminum, but the traditional body will be made of steel. This means the vehicle will now weigh less and that way it will improve its fuel economy as well as its general performances. This next-generation Jeep Wrangler will get solid front and rear axles and the classic ladder-frame construction. The new vehicle will also come with the soft-top option and with the sport roll-bar. Interior of this remarkable Jeep’s minion will also get some interesting changes and updates. Along with few changes which refer to the new upholstery and some other new materials inside the cabin, the new Wrangler will offer and new or enhanced security system and new infotainment system.
The 2016 JK Wrangler had the most refined yet rugged interior of any Wrangler to date and it appears that they are going to continue the interior for the 2018 Wrangler. Although details have been sparse, it looks like the next-gen Wrangler will offer increased leg room as well as a generally more spacious cabin. While it has been confirmed that the new Wrangler will have a fixed windshield, unlike the JK’s removable one, there has been no comment if the doors will be removable.
With that, let’s break down the significant changes here assuming this really is the next face of the Jeep Wrangler:
- There’s no room for a “Jeep” badge. It’s either 86’ed completely or moved up to the hood, the latter of which seems more likely.
- Headlights eat into the grille slots. This suggests the slots themselves are wider, and calls back to the pre-“Wrangler” CJ Jeep style of the 1970s and early 80s.
- No more blinkers below the headlights. Past hints and leaks have indicated that the turn signal lights will be
- LED strips on the fenders in the next Jeep Wrangler, as opposed to circles on the face.
- The kink in the grille slots curving inward is reminiscent of the first Jeep to be called “Wrangler,” the YJ style, which most famously had square headlights and ran from the late 1980’s into the 1990’s.
- The whole grille-surround piece is significantly wider at the top than the current unit, suggesting the front fenders will be noticeably reshaped as well.
2018 JEEP WRANGLER POWERTRAIN
Depending on a weight loss the new 2018 Jeep Wrangler could utilize a four-cylinder power unit as it has in the past, but according to some sources most likely it will get the updated version of today’s Pentastar V6. Also, Jeep is trying to fit Chrysler’s ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic transmission in the new Wrangler.
2018 Jeep Wrangler Engine Options
The 3.6L Pentastar V6 engine has worked as the heart powering the Jeep Wrangler for a year and it looks like it will continue to power the 2018 Wrangler; no word yet if it will receive a power bump or continue producing 285 HP & 260 TQ. However, the ’18 Jeep Wrangler will have some other options to choose from including a 300 HP turbo 4-cylinder called the “Hurricane” and a diesel engine. A long requested power plant, a diesel engine would be perfect for off-roading with its low-end torque and a 4-cylinder would be ideal for the more fuel-focused enthusiasts; pictures of the Hurricane engine have already surfaced online. When it comes to the 2018 Jeep Wrangler engine, it appears there will be options for every type of Jeeper.
RELEASE DATE AND PRICE
We could expect to see the new 2018 Jeep Wrangler revealed at the end of 2016 or at the beginning of 2017. Its starting MSRP will be around $25,000.
